Jacob Lawrence, The Lovers (1946)
February 25, 2004:
In the end my decision is to continue trying, to refuse to fall into bitterness,
to continue to hold my hand out no matter how hurtful the response. Or lack of response.
I realize that this may sound like Christian masochism. That's not my intention.
My emotional and spiritual purpose is to emphasize trying, the importance of
this good intention regardless of outcome. What matters is the attempt.
And anyway it doesn't really hurt that much anymore. Only a little bit.
