Apart from transference she doesn't know how to consume a work, where transference means imaginative identification with the hero or falling in love with the leading man. That the work itself might be a form of communication is lost to her.

Odd, given her degree in music.

Yet maybe not so odd. The music she loves is Romantic: Beethoven. The theory of consumption she understands is Romantic: surrender your identity to the will of the Author. A 19th century intellect, the product of partial, contradictory education in provincial settings. San Diego as time machine.
