The people congregate in groups blocking the sidewalk. Smokers in clusters before restaurant doors; schoolgirls in a rank shoulder-to-shoulder; two gray-haired women with long dog leashes. It takes an effort to move, like a ship navigating among shoals.

Agoraphobia. Return to the big city after far-away travel.
