January 6, 2005:

Gray-haired woman, poodle-permed, putting on weight. Familiar face, but changed, changed. Deep sadness in both eyes, trembling lip. Voice catches. "I'm an old lady!", half in surprise, half in despair.

She was seeking comfort for a pain I couldn't share just then. Nowadays I understand it better.
