February 19, 2006:

The backs of things as metaphor for capitalist culture.

Loading docks, dumpsters, air conditioning vents: all that grubby stuff they hide with veneers and facades. Behind the wealth and success and power there are the millions in prison, the millions unemployed, the millions poor, the hungry, the homeless. Strip away the glitz and glitter and the naked fact emerges that wealth is built by exploitation. Just as every glamorous storefront disguises sewer pipes.
