August 13, 2006:

You'd find him sleeping in the common room with his eyes open, unblinking.

He was addicted to television. "I can't have a TV in the house. If I do, I'll watch CSPAN eight hours a day."

He joined a political cult. His motives were noble: compassion for the poor, anger over injustice. Yet ultimately, I think, he needed someone to tell him what to do.

He once said that I was his hero. I felt that way about him too, for a time.

"I do ten pushups at a time three or four times a day. That's much easier than doing forty all at once."

Laughing: "That's not really the point, though, is it?"
