It's neither neanderthal nor fascist.

David is not the hero of the film, he's the villain. He postures as a physical pacifist, yet he inflicts ongoing emotional violence on his warm and human wife.

The film shows the transformation of one kind of violence into another kind. Made possible by the long history of the first kind, without which the transformation would not have been possible.
