The aircraft begins its takeoff run by hurling down a narrow chute, wingtips just half an inch from pink-toned wooden walls, plastered like billboards. "The plane must be controlled by computer," the passengers say; "there's no way a human pilot could exercise such perfect control." Ahead there are traffic lights where pedestrians wait to cross the runway. A woman comes close to being run down.
