My fantasy was that she'd miss me so much she'd turn around and come straight back, at the intermediate airport where she had to change planes.

Instead she waited more than a full day to call to say she'd arrived safely.

I suppose there's no special irony in this. Just one example of the standard disconnect between expectation and outcome at the heart of many relationships.
