The ammunition is nearly gone. We've been firing directly into open-topped American landing craft, but now we're taking suppressive fire and rifle-fired grenades.
We're trying to get out, but the enemy are coming in. Soldiers with M-1s, a sergeant, with a Thompson submachine gun. Muzzle flashes, and I feel heat in my belly. Heat and wetness, and, although there is no pain, I fall forward into darkness.
