Jacob Lawrence, Depression (1950)
She moved from the old apartment and forever after I felt homeless.
As if I'd believed that apartment would always be there, always and forever,
for me to run to when I needed to find myself.
In fantasy I've moved back there, carrying the scraps of furniture salvaged from those days.
Two round end tables.
Three small book shelves.
The Pioneer component stereo she bought in 1968.
To do what? Sleep late. Listen to the sprinklers in summer. Listen to the voices of ghosts.
