Jacob Lawrence, The Party (1935)
Asleep in her car,
parked cliffside above a surfer beach.
if the night is cold.
The precariousness of that life.
To lose the car means to live in a shelter,
to lose all independence and autonomy.
While its loss of course is likely,
through repossession or,
It's not hard to understand her insecurity.
Her need for guarantee,
that no matter what might happen she would be taken care of,
have a roof, a shower, a meal.
Or to have sympathy for the relationship habits
which this kind of stress must surely reinforce.
So that it's sympathy itself which leads to doubts about
the sincerity of her love.
