There's a story about the dobermans and the pregnant neighbor lady. In the depths of his alcoholism her father let loose the dogs. The woman was uninjured, but scared half to death, and she sued, reasonably enough.
Her mother's response was telling. The attack wasn't the important thing. What was crucial was that no-one should know about it. And so the most important thing in the world was to never speak of it, ever.
This became the family's main shared activity: not talking about what happened.
