When he was young she ignored him because he was a child, and, by definition, not worth listening to.

As an adult she tunes him out because she feels that, as an educated man, the things he says are past her comprehension.

Which brings to mind the question: was there ever in her life a Goldilocks moment when he was mature enough to respect, while not yet educated enough to dismiss?
