Bottom of the hierarchy, butt of everyone's spite and stupid steely little knives, of every small or ungenerous impulse in a sick family dominated by disloyalty and vengefulness and mean-spiritedness.

Her illness is a godsend for spirits like these. It allows them to claim moral superiority, when in truth she stands head and shoulders above the lot, every last pathetic plastic-souled one.
