It's like having dinner with a family who observe rituals and use language you haven't been introduced to. You'd be happy to conform but you don't know the rules.

So that they look at you like you're alien, while they behave toward you as though you've been deliberately rude. When the reality is far more sinister.

Because you are in truth alien. Your tribe is not their tribe, your world not their world. You do share certain rites but you understand them differently, to the extent that you understand them at all.
