Stands with younger brother against his orange-and-white early '60s Chevrolet. Car, house, brother, horses, ranch, sky: beautiful. Yet his face bears no expression, blank, as in nearly every photo, and to supplement I have no memories of him ever speaking more than two or three words, also expressionless, often profoundly guarded.

They say it was the war. He returned from the Ardennes refusing to speak of it, refusing to speak at all, seemingly. Never to me, anyway.
