July 3, 2015:

Ideology is a type of story which makes the obvious invisible.

Rainbow of growers' faces: white, asian. Someone says, "All it takes is water, sun, and time." Invisible because absent: tens of thousands of Mexican workers who harvest by hand. In this ideological universe there is no labor.

Freud's concepts map ideology better than Marx's. Repression, displacement. Here the rural working people are the absent center of the manifest content, where that content is warped and elided around their absence.
