He went through a period in life when he was very strong.
Not just strong: hard.
The wrong kind of strength: that brittle, stubborn strength that refuses to sway when the wind blows, and is eventually destroyed.
Strength without pity. Strength without compassion.
Just like his father.
It was many years before he understood that.
