If I say, I wish I'd been more patient, more supportive, done more to create communication, given more, forgiven more, how is this different from saying I wish I'd been a different person? And you'd been a different person, and we'd only ever experienced together the positive and competent parts of our natures?

Tautology, in the end. If we'd been different people we could have been different people.
