Aphasia.

Work for the words. The brain commands, but muscles fail, and the tongue is as if swollen.

Is this an ordinary artifact of age and declining health? Or is it an unexpected outcome, along with memory loss, of an inappropriately balanced cocktail of well-meant antidepressants?

Is it, perhaps, more sinister? Outcome of silent stroke? Brain infection? Demonic possession?

He can write, but he cannot speak.
