October 8, 2022:

To me the twin beating hearts of San Diego were OB Pier and Casa de Bandini.

Bandini's in summer when it was still in Old Town. 80 degree evenings under lanterns in the trees, with margaritas large as goldfish bowls. I'd take out of town friends there to teach them the visceral lesson: this is San Diego.

The pier all year, but especially summer. Grab a sandwich and beer at Poma's, carry them the quarter mile to the farthest benches on the T. Watch the sunset, turn around, watch the fireworks at Sea World.

Magical light. Subtle tang of sea breeze. Warmth. Friends, vitality, purpose.

Home.
