There's a story of one of The Bounty kidnap victims. She escaped Pitcairn on a whaler bound for, I think, Lima, if I remember. Worked there as a seaport barmaid twenty years, saving up her passage home. Home: returned to Tahiti after decades of foreign worlds in a life not her own.
I cried, that first snow, a year ago. So close to home, so close, close enough to visit, where the drive is only 90 minutes, and the sky is correct, and I can't smell the sea but I can at least easily reach it.
