January 19, 2024:
Schwimmer is a good choice. His weaselly boyishness as the martinet Captain Sobel. Arbitrary, unjust. Resented. The Company does achieve its laudable cohesion because of him. It's dialectical, though: against him: not alongside him. A certain type of negative leadership.
Contrast "Ack-Ack" Haldane, whose Company wept for him on Peleliu. Sledge cites his "utmost compassion", specifically for the mental health of his soldiers. Schwimmer's Sobel displays no empathy.
This is certainly unfair to them both. It reduces them each to a single dimension. I'm thinking here of Wilde: "Pen, Pencil and Poison". Are people diminished or enriched by multi-dimensionality? Where a certain modern tendency, largely of the liberal left, is to reject individuals lacking the caricatured fingerprints of saints.
Wainwright, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Sobel. They all produced excellent works.
