February 17, 2024:
Junior hits his snare differently than dad.
The stick-on-rim thing: "rim-adjacent snare". A modern sensibility using rim metal to imply sharper crack. Dad by contrast was all tuning, placement, acceleration, rebound. He played with a surprisingly light touch for such a massive sound. It's about neither force nor rim metal.
That, and mic technique. There are no close mics on dad. He'd murder anyone who tried.
