"muscular adonis", began the featured poem in the University's annual literary revue.
That level of embarrassing mediocrity should tell you all that's needed to fully understand the University's culture in that period, among that milieu. The ineptitude of the poetry matched the crude triviality of the dominant gender roles: a university where male undergraduates went to make business contacts, female undergraduates went to collect their "Mrs Degree", and football drove alumni donations.
Our college was superior in every respect: academically, socially, morally. We knew it, and, unfortunately, we said as much, out loud, every chance we got.
Little suspecting just how much that hubris would contribute to our demise.
